Son of Faith (excerpt)

INT.AN’S PARENT’S HOUSE-FISH SHOP-DAY

Shu Chen sells fish in a small store before her house to a handful of customers.

INT.COUPLE’S ROOM-DAY

Jung Chen, her husband lies on a bed asleep in a small room. The rays of the sun stream into the room lighting it up partially.

INT.LIVING ROOM-DAY

Medium-height 14 year-old An Chen wearing a pale white singlet and pale blue shorts sweeps the uncarpeted room with a broom. Soon, he completes sweeping and collects the refuse and places the collector at a corner of the room and starts dusting the few furniture there: a sofa, two arm chairs, a centre table, two coffee tables and a small TV. After dusting, he exits the room with the broom and collector in hand.

INT.BACK OF HOUSE-CONTINUE

An disposes off the refuse into a rubbish bin and returns inside.

INT.COUPLE’S ROOM-DAY

Jung suddenly awakes as the bright rays glare at him. He sits up in his bed and buries his face in his palms for a few seconds and yawns uncovering it. He appears a bit tipsy and has partially red eyes. He wears nothing on his torso but a short below. After a minute he rises and begins to slowly walk away.

INT.BATH-CONTINUE

Jung washes his face in a sink several times over. Finally, he stops and stares at it in the mirror before him and exits the place without wiping his face.

EXT.FISH SHOP-DAY

Jung arrives at his wife’s fish shop. The customers have left and only Shu remains removing the scales off the fish in a bowl.

JUNG

(says loudly in a little tipsy tone)

Hey, how are you?

SHU

(cheerfully lifting up her head)

Hello, I didn’t see you coming.

JUNG

(sits on a stool by the shop)

It’s ok. How is business this morning?

SHU

Good, quite impressive I must say. I already made a $100.

JUNG

Wow! That’s really impressive. A $100 is good, very good.

SHU

Yes, it is. Have you eaten yet? I made breakfast already.

JUNG

Thanks dear. By the way where is An?

SHU

Isn’t he inside?

JUNG

I haven’t seen him since I awoke. Perhaps, he’s working inside. I’d check.

SHU

Alright. Ah, here comes another client.

JUNG

(rises off stool)

Ok, I’d be leaving you now, see you later.

SHU

Ok.

Park returns inside while Shu serves the customer.

INT.LIVING ROOM-DAY

Park arrives at room and meets An carrying a large bowl of clothes approaching his direction.

JUNG

(loudly but composed)

Where are you going?

AN

(cheerfully)

Good morning father.

JUNG

Morning son, what’s that in your hands?

AN

Clothes, yours, mine and mother’s. I’m going to wash them.

JUNG

(says and begins to walk away)

Ah, ok. Wash them well then.

AN

(abruptly calls him)

Father!

JUNG

(stops and turns)

Yes, what do you want?

AN

(runs to him)

Father, I need some new clothes please. I need new singlets for school and some nice shirts I can wear at home.

JUNG

(chuckles staring at him)

You need some new clothes huh?

AN

(nods his head)

Yes please.

JUNG

Ok, how much does it cost?

AN

I-

JUNG

(interrupting him)

Would $10 be ok?

AN

(a bit shocked)

$10?

JUNG

(dips hand into pocket)

Of course, it would be.

AN

(staring at him)

Father, that’s too small.

JUNG

What? What did you say?

AN

(softly looking in his face)

$10 cannot buy me all the new clothes I want.

JUNG

(immediately slaps him)

How rude of you!

An screams and falls to the floor but Park continues slapping his face. An covers his cheeks with his palms.

JUNG

(says and kicks him)

How rude of you!

An screams and Shu hears it this time and rushes into the house.

SHU

What is happening here!

An continues to cry while Jung glances at her and begins to walk away.

SHU

(looking at Jung)

Honey, what happened? What did you do to him?

Jung ignores her and continues walking out.

AN

(cries)

He slapped me…he butted me…

SHU

(rushes to him)

Oh baby, I’m sorry.

Shu carries him off the floor and exits the room.

INT. AN’S ROOM-CONTINUE

Shu places him onto his mat on the floor and takes a look at the bruises on his cheeks, face, leg and thighs. An wails when she touches there.

SHU

I’m shocked, your father did all this to you?

An doesn’t respond. He cries softly. Abruptly, Sori rises.

SHU

(says and exits the room)

Dear, I’d be right back ok. Just a minute I’m going to get my handbag from my room.

Five minutes later, Shu returns to the room, properly dressed and carries An in her arms and exits the room.

EXT.SHOP-CONTINUE

Shu locks up the fish store and puts the key in her hang bag and attempts to carry An but he refuses softly.
